The client required a comprehensive transformation of an open warehouse into a distribution and holding facility for aerospace operations. The project presented several challenges, including:

Client SatisfactionI became involved in a project to fit out a new 70000sq ft warehouse that had been built but not fitted out and SMS had been appointed the principal contractor for M&E fit out. Very early in my involvement it became clear that our company had not considered all the elements required which had resulted in a lot of missed elements being omitted from the initial scope of works that SMS had tendered for. We also found that there were opportunities to prepare the building for future growth that had been overlooked at the initial build stage prior to SMS being appointed. So potentially we had a “Perfect Storm” as many elements had to be readdressed and changed.
Against this background I was expecting a lot of issues with the contractor as is usually the case when change is required mid contract. However, this was not the experience I had with SMS. They were proactive in helping to resolve the problems and were very flexible and fair when we were late making changes. This is certainly a refreshing change. The amount of change we finally introduced was significant and would not have been achieved with a lesser contractor. All their staff have been first class in their approach to helping us to bring the project to completion and all their work has been to the highest standard. If I had any further works of this nature, I would certainly want SMS to be the contractor and I can highly recommend them.
